On Tuesday, July18th the New Jersey Salsa Project hosted its first
roundtable to discuss the current and future state of salsa in Jersey.
Dr. Katherine Borland of Ohio State University hosted the event. This
was the first opportunity for established salseros to talk collectively
about their work and mission. The conversation was upbeat and
enthusiastic. In attendance were Suzy Q and (top left to right) Johann
Pichardo, Jossue Torres, Mario B, Smiling Dave, Juan Calderón, Sweety
from Salsabeat, Winsome Lee, Jesse Yip and Ray Colón; (bottom left
to right) Alex Díaz, Griselle Ponce-Galarza, Ismael Otero, Joanna
Sanchez, junior researcher Miranda West, and Dr. Borland. Invited but
unable to attend were Christina Piedra, Javier from Salsabeat, Ray
Rodriguez, Barbara Capaldi, Henry Knowles, George Vega, Luis Zegarra,
Yesenia Peralta, Victor Mayovanex, and Amanda con Estilo.
Dr. Borland’s project will document the development of salsa in New
Jersey and its spread internationally. By collecting the personal stories
of professional salsa dancers, instructors and their students, old school
and social dancers, DJs and musicians, Dr. Borland will capture and
convey the passion, values and cultural knowledge that this dance
embodies. At the first roundtable, participants were united around the
idea that what makes Jersey unique is the quantity of excellent
dancers it has produced. They pledged to strengthen the local scene
and put New Jersey on the international map. Above all, these
instructors want to share their passion for the dance. “We are making
history here,” Jossue Torres stated at the conclusion of the roundtable.
Dr. Borland is anxious to hear from other dancers and fans at all ability
levels. If you would like to share your stories of salsa dancing in
Jersey, please contact Dr. Borland at borland.19@osu.edu. Please
use the subject heading New Jersey Salsa Project.
